By: Evelynn Escobar-Thomas

Trends come and go but on a campus where there are various styles like Virginia Commonwealth University keeping up with the seasons has it’s advantages. Sophia Li, a sophomore fashion merchandising major at VCU is the style editor of Ink Magazine. With Fashion week just ending trend watchers, like her, are on the prowl.

Q. What do you think about this seasons trends?

A. This season I am seeing a lot of color and minimalistic styles. The ruffle trend from last year is evolving into draping. Fashion goes in cycles and that cycle is coming back. It’s not revolutionary, it’s evolutionary. Honey dew also seems to be a very popular color this season.

Q. What did you think about fashion week?

A. I thought it was amazing, but not as shocking as prior fashion weeks. Leather and fur have are appearing on staple items, like pea-coats or full dresses etc. All the editors said it was bland and boring, but it’s easier for consumers to buy what they’re used to. Fur and leather are coming in all types of varieties.

       Q. What are your favorite trends currently?

A. I love mixing patterns: florals/stripes polka-dot/tie-dye. I’m also big into old Hollywood style, high necklines, and longer hem lines.

       Q. What trends have you spotted on campus?

A. Boho chic vibe is strong in Richmond. People here make grungy fashionable. VCU would be the 90s if it were a decade. There is much diversity so a wide spectrum of fashion is displayed. We are showing a great array of fashion as opposed to Ralph Lauren Polo prep at UVA. We have the best of everything here.

Q. What is the most ridiculous thing you’ve seen someone wear at VCU?

A. There is this girl I like to call rainbow girl because wears every single color of the rainbow. She has a skirt in all color of the rainbow and it’s extremely interesting to see her pull it all off.

Q. What would you like to see more on campus?

A. I would like to see a more business casual approach to style on campus. We are older and are becoming more professional so it would be nice to see a shift.

HopeWater is a bottled water company based on giving back to the Richmond community through four Richmond charities: Aids Response Inc., Tricycle Gardens, Charity Family Life and pink hope to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. Each charity correlates with a specific bottle (red hope, green hope, blue hope and pink hope) and receives 10 cents from each sale.

Leon Humphrey, a sophomore political science major, is the CEO and founder of HopeWater. “I came in trying to be a business major,” stated Humphrey. “Business school tried to groom you for a job instead of teaching you how to create one.”

While most students are still deciding on majors, looking for internships, or just focusing on school, Humphrey has jumped ahead of the curve by branding and selling his product.

HopeWater was founded in October 2010 but was actually thought up during Humphrey’s junior year of high school.

“My grandma is an entrepreneur in Jamaica, so she always sparked an entrepreneur spirit in me,” said Humphrey. “I wanted to develop a company that helped the community.” HopeWater became operational in March of 2011.

Since becoming operational, HopeWater already has built partnerships with some major carriers throughout the VCU/Richmond community. These carriers include Bodillaz, Farm to Family, Ellwood Thompson, Nate’s Taco Truck and Pizza Tonight. HopeWater also plans to reach out to Little Mexico and Smoothie King in the near future. A bottle of HopeWater sells for $1.40 in all locations except Ellwood Thompson where it sells for $1.20 because of a special deal decided by Humphrey since Ellwood was their first carrier. Some carriers have even made HopeWater the only bottled water that they sell such as Farm to Family, Nate’s Taco Truck, Pizza Tonight and Bodillaz.

Local ties have made it easier for other big local carriers to hop on such as Bodillaz a local grill restaurant. “It’s local, we deal with local small, young businesses and we wanted to get a hand in helping spread awareness,” said Bodillaz owner Bert Terranova. Bodillaz is the most recent carrier added to the list and with its location, is one of the most immediate to the VCU community.

HopeWater plans to promote and spread awareness on the VCU campus and throughout Richmond in an advertising campaign this fall.

“Our biggest immediate goal is to be carried by VCU,” said Humphrey. “I’m a VCU student and I pay to create this market, it would only be right for them to sell it.” With the fall semester unfolding, keep a lookout for a HopeWater vendor around campus. “Pick your bottle pick your charity, think about when buying anything the things that the product can being you,” said Jesse Mobley.
